Sing As You Are is an hour-long pop-up program for children where we explore sound, learn about our vocal instruments, and build an instant choir through easy-to-learn (and super catchy!) ditties. Women’s History Pin-Making Craft: March Break at Colborne Lodge

A 45-minute program that starts with a tour of the women’s history the Lodge and a camera (site iPad). Pictures will be taken by participants and then printed in the Winter Kitchen in the basement of CL. These pictures will then be turned into a button for wearing or a fridge magnet to take home. Drawing supplies will be available to add to the button art creation.

Enhance your visit with an added family-friendly and interactive baking workshop during March Break at Fort York! Suitable for children ages 4+ and must include one adult per family. Reserve ahead to ensure access to this one-hour baking workshop!

Pre-register for an open-hearth cooking workshop in our historic kitchen.

Gather your family or friends for this two-hour hands-on workshop and learn more about domestic skills in the pre-industrialized world.  Work together in our restored historic kitchen to prepare a traditional recipe to share at the end of the workshop.  Recipes contain dairy and gluten products.  No substitutions are possible.

Each group must include at least one adult who is responsible for any children in the group.

Pre-register for a beginner’s weaving workshop.  Gather your family or fiends for this two-hour hands-on workshop and learn more about domestic skills in the pre-industrialized world.  A group of up to 5 people will work together using a tabletop loom to create a handwoven project to take home.

Each group must include at least one adult who is responsible for any children in the group.

Drop in to enjoy the family friendly activities and be inspired to keep creating at home.  Free activities include the weaving studio with cardboard mini looms to take home. Get cozy and read in our Book Nook. Make music in the front parlour. Put yourself on the map in the Gallery.

Plants and animals evolved in regular cycles of light and dark. But with increased urbanization means more artificial light and less dark skies in cities like Toronto. The lengthening day due to artificial light impacts all living beings, including humans. Step into the shadows in High Park to embrace the natural night and discover how birds, bats, insects, and 70% of mammals are responding to diminished darkness.

With the spring sun shining warmly and the rains softly falling, the mosses and lichens in High Park are every shade of green! On this family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day-inspired walk, we’ll learn about the different types of mosses and lichens, why they’re different from other plants, and their connection to folklore. If we are lucky, we may spot a Leprechaun or two!

The Market Gallery’s current exhibit, Migrant Stories has been produced through The International City Partnerships and the Migrant Story Telling Project. Toronto and its partner city of Frankfurt, Germany are working on a multi-year joint program to build an experience where migrant stories are shared, amplified, and promoted through a global and local lens. The effects of forced migration and climate change displacement have made the questions arising around the inclusion of migrants and refugees a topic of global significant interest to both the City of Toronto and the City of Frankfurt. Both cities are historically arrival cities and recognize the importance of municipal leadership on newcomer and migrant issues.

Migrant Stories uses video to highlight the real stories of migrants to Toronto, in their own words. This exhibit includes the experiences of and artifacts from the life of Uncle Lloyd, a 96-year-old Canadian migrant who arrived in Toronto in the mid-20^th century. This is the first of various projects in what is a multi-year partnership between Toronto and Frankfurt.

From March 11 to 15 the whole family is invited to stop by the McMichael for a Storytelling Circle that explores a different exhibition and theme each day at 11:30 am and 1 pm. Our expert storytellers will regale you with tales of creativity and wonder that will transport you inside the artist’s mind and to the outer reaches of your own imagination. The Storytelling Circles are approximately 45 minutes in length and are free with gallery admission.

Two all ages workshops for family groups where visitors will learn how to make either sambuusas (same workshop offered twice) or bannock (one workshop) and hear the stories of these two foods. Visitors will get to eat what they make and get a recipe to take home.

Immigrants coming to Toronto bring with them the foods of their homelands. Indigenous foods have fed people in the land we now call Toronto since time immemorial. March Break at Montgomery’s Inn celebrates and showcases the foods and culinary traditions of immigrants and Indigenous communities because these cultural elements are an integral part of Toronto’s identity.
